Overview

Qatar International School is led and managed entirely by British professionals, who strive to maintain the highest standards of the current English education system, whilst also supporting the school’s Arabic culture and international context. The vast majority of QIS teaching staff have trained and taught in the UK, and we pride ourselves on ensuring we keep up to date with the best international practice in education and learning. Students are taught in Key Stages from Early Years and Key Stage 1 through to Key Stage 5, and examinations are taken in GCSE, IGCSE and A Levels using UK examination boards. Almost all students leaving QIS move on to higher education in leading universities all over the world but most especially the UK, USA, Canada, UAE and Qatar itself.

Learning environment

During the first three years in the Secondary school, all students follow a broad-based balanced curriculum. The following subjects are studied in Years 7, 8 and 9: English, Mathematics, Science, Arabic, Islamic Studies (Muslim students), Qatar History, Information Technology, Art and Design & Technology, Geography, History. Non-Muslim students will also get the opportunity to study French. During Year 9, pupils select the subjects they wish to pursue through to IGCSE through our options process. The two-year course leads towards an IGCSE in each subject studied. The International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) is an internationally recognised qualification, which is administered by both Cambridge Assessment International Examinations (CAIE) and Pearson EDEXCEL examination boards. The IGCSE is specifically designed to cater for international students. We also offer BTEC qualifications, as of September 2019, which are administered by Pearson EDEXCEL. Art, Arabic First Language, Biology, Business Studies, Chemistry, Commerce, Computer Science, Design and Technology (Graphic Design or Resistant Materials), Economics, Environmental Management, English First Language, English Literature, French, Geography, History, Information and Communication Technology, BTEC Information and Communication Technology, Islamic Studies, Mathematics, Double Award Science, Physical Education, and Physics. Throughout Year 12, students study between two and five subjects leading to Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and International Advanced Subsidiary (IAS) qualifications. We also attempt, within the constraints of the timetable, to cater for those Year 12 students who also wish to re-sit one or two of their IGCSEs. The AS/IAS exams are administered by CAIE, Pearson EDEXCEL and the Assessment and Qualifications Alliance (AQA). All are accepted as entry qualifications to universities in most countries. They are also accepted as qualifications to attend foundation courses in most universities. Free time in the student timetable is allocated to private study sessions, where students are supervised and required to study independently.
